What a well-insulated loft does

Heat rises. In a home without loft insulation, around a quarter of it is lost through the roof.

  • Lower heating bills

Keep more of the heat you pay for, whatever you heat your home with.

  • A warmer, steadier home

Rooms hold their warmth for longer, and upstairs stays cooler on hot days.

  • Up to the recommended 270mm

Whether we are topping up an old layer or starting from bare joists.

  • Pipes and tanks protected

Pipes and tanks in a colder loft are lagged so they are less likely to freeze.

  • No draughts at the hatch

An insulated, draught-proofed hatch closes the most common gap.

  • Pairs with solar and heat pumps

A heat pump runs best in a home that holds its heat, and every unit your panels make goes further.

Mineral wool or PIR boards

Two ways to reach the same standard. Which one suits depends on the space you have and how you use the loft.

Mineral wool

Most lofts
  • Rolls laid between and across the joists
  • 270mm deep to reach the recommended level
  • Non-combustible, and lets the loft breathe
  • The lowest cost per square metre

PIR boards

Tight or boarded lofts
  • Rigid insulation boards, cut to fit
  • A similar standard at a much thinner depth
  • Good where there is no room for 270mm
  • Costs more per square metre

Fitted properly, not just piled in

The difference between insulation that works and insulation that just sits there.

270mm, in two layers, with the eaves left to breathe.

  • Between and over the joists

The first layer fills between the joists. The second runs across them at right angles, covering the timber so heat cannot escape through it.

  • Storage without squashing

Boards laid straight on top crush insulation and cut its effect. Raised loft legs lift a new boarded floor clear of the full depth.

  • Ventilation kept at the eaves

We keep the eaves clear and fit ventilation trays where needed, so air keeps moving and condensation cannot build up.

  • Pipes, tanks and the hatch

We lag pipes and the cold-water tank, leave the area under the tank uncovered so a little warmth stops it freezing, and insulate and draught-proof the hatch.

How much will I save?

It depends on your home, how you heat it and what is in the loft now. The biggest savings come from lofts with little or no insulation. Topping up a thin layer saves less, but still makes a difference you can feel.

We give you an honest view on the survey. If your loft is already at 270mm, we will tell you it is not worth doing.

How thick should loft insulation be?

The recommended depth for mineral wool is 270mm. We lay it in two layers: one between the joists, then a second across them at right angles, so the timber is covered too and heat cannot escape through it.

PIR boards reach a similar standard at a much thinner depth, which helps where there is not room for 270mm.

Can I still use my loft for storage?

Yes. Boards laid straight on top squash the insulation and cut how well it works. We fit raised loft legs that lift a new boarded floor clear of the full depth, so you keep your storage and the insulation keeps working.

How long does it take?

Most lofts are done in one day, often in a few hours. A boarded loft, or one with a lot to work around, can take longer, and your quote will say so.

We ask you to clear anything stored up there before we arrive. If that is difficult, tell us and we will talk it through.

Will insulation cause damp or condensation?

Not when it is fitted properly. A cold loft needs air moving through it, so we keep the eaves clear and fit ventilation trays where needed, letting damp air out.

We check for leaks or existing condensation on the survey and raise anything we find before we start.

Are there grants for loft insulation?

Possibly. Government schemes such as ECO4 and the Great British Insulation Scheme fund insulation for some households, depending on things like income, benefits, council tax band and your home’s energy rating. Funding comes through energy suppliers and is not guaranteed.

You can check whether you might qualify on GOV.UK. Either way, we quote the full price upfront so you know where you stand.
